Blue Monday

Hello everyone~ Blue Monday is here again and we want to thank Sally for hosting this fun event.

Today I would like to share a few unique pictures from our fair Isle. Some of you are curious about the Island so I thought this would be a good topic to regale you with. This bridge which I'm about to show you was the subject of great controversy a few years back! Up until the bridge was built, we had to take the ferry across the Strait to get to the mainland.
It was thought by many that a bridge linking the Island to the mainland would pave the way for a lot of riff-raff; the smuggling of illegal drugs, contraband, etc. Some also thought that we would lose our simple way of life here. Farmers, fishermen, tourist operators, and many Islanders weren't happy about a bridge being built. The Island finally settled it at the polls and the bridge went under construction to the tune of one billion dollars! It took four years to build and opened to traffic in 1997. It endures as one of Canada's top engineering achievements of the twentieth century.
Anyway, a little more than ten years later, we are still an Island enjoying a slower pace of living, and we enjoy the convenience of a faster trip across the Strait. What often used to take anywhere from thirty-five minutes to an hour, depending on the weather, now only takes about ten to fifteen minutes to cross.
This is the Confederation Bridge which links Prince Edward Island to New Brunswick. It is a curved 12.9 kilometre {8 miles} long bridge and it is the longest bridge in the world, crossing ice-covered water.
The blue is fabulous, don't you think?
This photo was taken in the winter with the ice in the Strait.
This aerial shot is my favourite! I can't take credit for any of the photos but aren't the blues wonderful?
Now wander on over to see Sally and all the other Blue Monday participants by clicking on the link http://smilingsally.blogspot.com/ or the Blue Monday button on my sidebar. Have a lovely day everyone!
